Mr. Welling has a Bachelor of Music Degree from Wayne State University.  He has studied with some of the foremost trumpet players locally and nationally including Gordon Smith (DSO), Bill Lucas (DSO), Gordon Stump, Ric Wilkins, Jon Faddis and Bobby Shew.  

A private instructor for more than 15 years, Mr. Welling is currently on faculty in the music dept at Wayne State.   His playing experience has been wide and varied as well, from local and national radio and tv jingles, to recordings with Grand Funk Railroad, Biv 10 and the Four Tops.   He has played for the likes of  Joe Williams, Johnny Mathis, and Dizzy Gillespie and as featured soloist with Frank Sinatra Jr.  Mr. Welling has also been involved with productions at the Fisher, the Fox, Pine Knob, and Meadowbrook Theaters.   A member of several local Big Bands and Top 40 Groups, Mr. Welling is a constant on the Detroit and Ann Arbor music scene.
