Jake Matthews is a versatile & dynamic drummer known for his accurate proficiency, creative & technical abilities, and captivating stage presence. Jake began playing drums when he was 10 years old and quickly developed a passion for music and drumming that has driven his career. He has been professionally performing since the age of 16 and in 2017 received his BA in Music, concentrating in music business & jazz drum set, from Wayne State University. His musical journey has entailed a wide array of artists and has led him to explore a diverse range of genres, everything from the high intensity of rock & metal to the delicate intricacies of jazz & classical. He has an affinity for rock, pop-punk, and metalcore music.
Jake has performed with various artists such as Hala, Izzy T, The Hatchet Man Project, and has worked with George Faison; the choreographer for The Wiz. He has opened for notable acts like Ryan Cabrera, Delilah Bon, SECRETS, and has graced the stages of The Crofoot Ballroom, The King of Clubs, The Cube, and festivals such as JuggalOhio 3. Jake was a finalist in the 2025 The Loving Touch “Beat Off” Drum Contest and has been a featured guest on the Detroit Drummer’s Podcast. His musical influences include Travis Barker, John Bonham, Luke Holland, and Brian Blade, among many others.
Currently, Jake is performing regularly with numerous bands, mostly throughout the Metro-Detroit area, while also pursuing work as a touring drummer. He is also a session musician and records drums & percussion for various artists’ albums, some of which have been associated with Mack Avenue Records. Additionally, Jake is the owner & operator of Metro- Detroit’s only custom cymbal repair & modification business – Jake Matthews Drums.
